VanTuyl Ranch Management Plan

The VanTuyl Ranch (Ranch), a 460 acre parcel is located directly north of the city limits. The Ranch is flanked to the east by Slaughter House Road (County Road 13) and to the west by the Gunnison River . The federal government owns the river corridor, a line 100-feet from the high water mark, but the Colorado Division of Wildlife manages this river site and presently allows limited public access. The Ranch was purchased by the City with the intent of protecting the City's domestic water source, which is the underlying alluvial gravel aquifer.
The City has started to develop trails and improve the ranch house and agricultural out buildings. The City is leasing hay production and grazing rights.
The City is planning to annex the Ranch and establish development and use standards fulfilling the intended purpose of protecting the City's well head recharge area. The City has received a planning grant from Great Outdoors Colorado for the project. The proposed VanTuyl Ranch Long-Range Management Plan ( Management Plan ) will evaluate existing conditions, designate resource protection standards, and contemplate compatible land use and future facility functions. The Management Plan will include a strong natural resource planning component, as well as elements relating to land use, education, and recreation.
The project is a four-part process. The first module will build the project from a conceptual level and will include a detailed assessment of existing conditions. The second module will facilitate the development of future land use alternatives and lead to a preferred alternative choice. The last two modules will be dedicated to development of the final document. The four planning modules will be as follows:
